Corporal Punishment Reports Disclosed Under FOIA

The Washington Post used the D.C. Freedom of Information Act to seek records from the Metropolitan Police Department relating to reports of corporal punishment in the District’s schools.  The records were originally produced by the contractor providing security at D.C.

The Washington Post used the D.C. Freedom of Information Act to seek records from the Metropolitan Police Department relating to reports of corporal punishment in the District’s schools.  The records were originally produced by the contractor providing security at D.C. schools, and turned over to the MPD to evaluate the need for enforcement action.  In the 2008-2009 school year, 220 accusations of corporal punishment were reported–the records do not indicate in which cases further action was taken.  The Post sought the records as part of a follow up to schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee’s comments that teachers laid off in the fall under the auspices of budget cuts had "hit children."  Washington Post
